Scarlet Devil Mansion Defense: Biased Hero Guide

Thought I'd do a little guide to make people interested in the game, as well as provide tips to players if ever they plan on trying the game out/clear the game. This is taken from another user from shrinemaiden.org, but I added some of my own opinions here and there as well.

I've been playing this since v0.26a but only recently because of the 0.27 patch I realized that solo'ing easy wasn't extremely challenging anymore - it became impossible (especially with Genji's nerf).

Reimu

Her role is easy - survive and obtain as much score as possible. Her main responsibility is to stay alive and Keep Genji on the field. Reimu herself deals horrible damage, so take Genji as her main attack power. Other than that her buff is EXTREMELY effective for carries (especially Sakuya). Her LW weakens all enemies map-wide too, but the downside is that there is less time to kill the waves because of the slow effect on the mobs. Out of all the heroes she's probably the hero who needs money the least of all, considering Genji's stats are fixed on his level and buff.

Best paired with: Anyone

She can share a lane with anybody as long as Genji, once strong enough, is with Yamame killing her every time she respawns.

Not recommended with: Nobody

Reimu is best used NOT killing creeps during mid-late game until it gets too hard (which should NOT happen if you have a competent carry with the team). She can solo a whole lane herself if the team becomes shorthanded, but it is generally recommended that she avoid killing waves (except the boss waves) to give money to those who need it.

Marisa

Marisa is the resident kill-stealer (very fitting). Her Orreries Sun can pretty much clear a whole wave by itself, it's easily obtainable, and players can rush to it especially given that her innate is an AoE spell that can keep up with creep waves early on. Mid-game she starts to lose momentum and may find herself lacking kills... until she gets Master Spark which can REALLY kick serious butt especially when coupled with a maxed-out Hakkero.

Best paired with: Patchouli

Patchouli typically sucks early on, but can stomp everybody late in the game. Marisa can cover her until then.

Not recommended with: Remilia, Flandre, Tenshi

Remilia needs to kill as slow as possible, which Marisa is too much of an ass to let that happen. Flandre needs a lot of money to make herself the awesome boss-killer... and again Marisa is too much of a jackass to give her kills. Same applies to Tenshi, only she needs the money to be a tank, not a killer.

Remilia

Remilia is the roster's best farmer. With the Divine Shrine Maiden Outfit and the Portable Donation Box, level 1 on her bat skill, (or any of her AoE spells), proper use of the Red Devil Clock, she can gather a bit less than a million points on the sinsack wave (more if playing on normal or higher difficulty, and/or if you're spending the money as you farm). In fact she can do this for a whole while so everybody who doesn't need money could get the skills they want in advance. She can tank and deal damage decently too with her innate and LW. She really doesn't need as much money on her, which makes her a kind of enabler for carries like Reimu is.

Best paired with: Reimu, Patchouli, Meiling and Tenshi

Reimu and Patchouli can basically just stay out of the way until Remi runs out of MP, then they can get in for the kill. Meiling and Tenshi, whose killing abilities against mobs are pretty much the worst out of all the heroes, can just get rid of targets with low life from Remi's skills and get money, which they really need to get to their full potential.

Not recommended with: Instagibbers

All carries will eventually get to a point where they will kill creep almost instantly - which is bad for Remi. At that point it might be hard to transition to a different build.

Flandre

Best boss killer in the game. Her lifesteal, Four of a Kind, and Q.E.D. can pretty much down ANY boss so long as she has enough health to actually get to the boss without dying. Kills are essential to Flan until her innate reaches about level 6 or so on, but she needs money all the time.

Best paired with: Meiling, Tenshi, Patchouli

All of them kill creeps at a decent pace (except Patchouli late-game). Flandre kill creeps at a decent pace as well. Surprisingly, it works. Plus her lifesteal is lovely for tanks like Meiling and Tenshi.

Not recommended with: Marisa, Sakuya and Suika

Marisa instagibs creeps early on. Sakuya instagibs creeps later. Suika instagibs creeps all throughout. They hamper Flandre's farming since she needs to get her innate skill up for the criticals and her money up for her stats, which these three don't agree on.

Sakuya

She's the group's best instagibber late-game. She's best built with passive skills than her actives. Against bosses she needs Tenshi or Meiling - or any tank for that matter (because if her first few attacks doesn't make her opponent die, she'll die. Glass cannon much?). Against normal creeps... she'll OHKO them ALL later on.

Best paired with: Suika

Awesome combination. They will instagib creeps like there was no yesterday. Such a team, if both are competent, will rake them an almost-equal killcount throughout the play, provided Suika acts as a tank for Sakuya as well.

Not recommended with: Remilia

Ironically, master-and-servant combination doesn't work too well. One side wants creeps to just DIE but the other one wants to take her time sucking the money out from the mobs. Do the logic. Otherwise, avoid letting them share a lane.

Patchouli

Patchy is the game's late-bloomer. Early on she can't solo, doesn't farm too well, fragile, and needs score, but later in the game she is jaw-droppingly strong. Koakuma at maximum level is actually stronger than a fully-built Flandre without skill usage. Philosopher's Stone... that skill is simply just BUTTSECKS-tier. Patchouli's killcout is also essential because of Koakuma - but not as important as Reimu's killcount.

Best paired with: Reimu and Remilia

Remilia can take her time farming the creeps and Patchouli can sneak in the final blow. It works amazingly well until late-game where Remi just becomes Patchy's tank until Philosopher's Stone's cooldown finishes. Reimu, well, those two can really clear the game on easy as Koakuma and Genji together work surprisingly well against a single line of the Kappa Cannon wave, with Patchy and Reimu on different lanes of course.

Not recommended with: Any instagibber except Marisa

Instagibbers... well they instagib creeps, which is horrible for Patchouli even with Koakuma considering she needs both the killcount and the money to buy power for her skills.

Meiling

Meiling is the game's second best tank (First is Tenshi and Third is Genji), probably because her skills are more offensive unlike the other one (later). Her innate is also a great boon to her defenses as it DOUBLES her armor per level. However to make her worth it she needs a lot of money and kills, which usually ends up to being a neccesity for her to solo a whole lane. If you don't give her kills and points, she will eventually turn into the worthless character known as China.

Best paired with: Flandre and Remilia

Meiling can sink the final blows on creeps as Remi farms from them - usually with her Colorful Typhoon spellcard. Flandre's lifesteal, along with Meiling's Fierce Tiger Strength and naturel crit... bosses beware!

Not recommended with: Everyone else (including early-game Flan)

She needs to team of with Remilia. Everyone else can kill better than her early on (except Tenshi). No kills, no points; no points, no items; no items, China.

Suika

Suika is broken early in the game, in the middle of the game, late in the game, and at the end of the game. She's probably THE most overpowered character in the game. With level 6 on her Oni Mist skill and at least level 1 on her Gourd, she can take on Yamame already - and just keep getting better from there. Basically she's OP.

Suika also needs to have a decent killcount, but at about level 6 and so, you really shouldn't care about it.

Best paired with: Sakuya

Basically Sakuya and Suika take turns instagibbing creeps. Suika can do it while her Oni Mist lasts and Sakuya can do it while the skill cools down.

Not recommended with: Anybody else who needs a high killcount

Suika is a GREAT instagibber. Even though the Oni Mist doesn't last a whole wave, you being there isn't really helping them...

Tenshi

With her temperaments, Tenshi holds her head high as the best tank in the game, though she needs a boss-item armor to really bring-out the Tenko in her (otherwise she'll just be Tenshit). Her innate REALLY helps, and the more when more people are playing. However she needs items (money, to be more general) to fully utilize her specialty. Oh and her her LW makes you invulnerable for a set time while reflecting back damage. Isn't that just SUPER?

Best paired with: Remilia, Patchouli

She pairs up the best with Remilia with the same reason as Meiling. Otherwise she's shit and not worth spending attention to. Otherwise she's also a good partner for Patchouli just in case her spells aren't enough (without PS)

Not recommended with: Carries and Meiling

Carries kill creeps ASAP, which Tenshi wouldn't like due to her need for money. Pairing her up with Meiling would be suicide as both characters' killing abilities are the lowest (Tenshi actually sucks more in killing than Meiling)

Iku

Iku is a versatile character who can excel either in tanking (innate and skills), damage (innate and skills) or support (skills). She works well with anybody EXCEPT Remilia. Do not be fooled by the relatively small multipliers on her innate, she DOES need a good killcount. Iku actually uses power the least among all the heroes, so generous people should maybe buy skills for the others.

Best paired with: Everyone except Remilia

Varsatility. She can either be a carrier, a tank or a supporter depending on your build.

Not recommended with: Remilia

Iku does NOT have a slow-kill button. Sorry.

Well that's it. Hope it helps~
